Sauntering Forth on Saturday - Back of the House "Lily Bed"

When we moved here, nearly 10 years ago, this bed held three or four regular yew bushes and two uprights.
I dug them, with help, and moved them to a neighbor's house - along with a spirea from the front of the house!

In Early Spring 2011, the bed looked like this:

On June 3, 2011, it looked like this:

On June 8, 2011, it looked like this:

On June 28, 2011 - this:

And today, July 21, everything is weary and worn and looking stressed from the recent week or so of extremely hot temperatures and no rain.  (I'm watering, but just enough to get by.)

And, by the way, the lens got foggy due to going from air conditioning outdoors to the humid hot air outdoors.

Well - I know it's going to rain.  And yes, when the weather cooperates a bit, I'll be sifting my compost and adding leaf mold again to top dress ALL the beds!!!  :-)

A Peek at the Sunny Corner Bed Today

My Sunniest Spot has some of the more traditional
Bright Spot flowers!

This is what's blooming today:
Notice the Sea Holly in the foreground.  I like this, but I think I'll need to deadhead the blossoms before the seeds form.  There are quite a number of seedlings growing from last year!

And here are a few close-ups...
This is "Joan" because my friend Joan gave it to me last Summer!

I don't know who this is below, but do you see a
renegade "Kwanzo" in the background??

 Siloam 'Dream Baby'

An unnamed from a SE Iowa Hybrid developer

 Platycodon grandiflorus - Balloon Flower

Here's that 'Buttered Popcorn' "Exotic" again!

 Liatris in the foreground

Asclepias - Butterfly Milkweed
(Looks a little pallid these days - it's been very hot and dry!)

 'Pardon Me' Hemerocallis

'Adonis Blue' Butterfly Bush

Mattie has been blooming all Spring and Summer...
Those flower heads that dropped their flowers are getting ready for a second blush!!

Salvia  'May Night'

Russian Sage

Pentas (annual)
There you have it!
Nothing too "Shady" in this spot.  :-)

Deterring Future Intruders?

I looked at them both and asked, "Would you?"
She smiled at her friend saying, "Let's do!"
So, they posted their sentry,
allowing no entry,
Meaning, "Hey deer! You're finally through!"

Near a Shady Bed in the backyard,
I asked, "Do you think this'll be hard?"
"No way," echoed they,
"We've decided to stay!"
Thought I... "Please let no deer in my yard!"

"Follow me now, I'll show you evidence,
And no, I admit to not having a fence."
So, after taking a glance,
They took up their stance.
And already I'm feeling less tense!

This is Susan Scare-the-Birds and her friend, the mysterious stranger - click the link to read of their first meeting, back on September 16, 2008.  :-)

Yes, indeed.  I think this is my first Summertime visit by a deer.  You might note there's been a "nice" clearing provided by a neighbor...(hopefully not attractive to other visitors) so I'm hoping these two provide a little diversion!!!
