There was a Party in the Backyard?

Why???

There was a party -
A one-person party!

A tap-dancin'
(not romancin')
Whoooo-doggie
soft shoe!

All because a
Ligularia

(say what?)

A Ligularia
("The Rocket!")

had sprouted in the backyard!
(shouted?)
No, sprouted!

There was a whoop -
And a delighted yelp!

A hand-clapping,
foot-stomping,
face-smiling,
happy feeling
party going on!

And it was by me, myself and I!

All because I'd found the perfect home for a Ligularia!

;-)

  1. Congrats, Shady! Is this your first Ligularia? If so, watch out, because you're going to become obsessed with them and will constantly want more! "The Rocket" is a great variety and was the first one we planted several years ago. Keep your eye out for L. dentata 'Desdemona', the one with bronzy red foliage, and flowers that resemble Black Eye Susans. It's our favorite and we try to add one more each year (we got this year's last weekend). Just keep em shady, don't let them dry out and they're so easy ...and they spread quickly too. What an exciting development in your garden!

  2. Loved the celebration and, as a fan of Ligularia, loved the plant!

  3. Lucky girl! I think they are gorgeous whether they bloom are not!

  4. Yep! Definitely cause for excitement. I planted one in a WRONG spot a couple of years ago. Too dry. It didn't return. This is a "run-off" area where it will enjoy moisture often. ;-) Another plant I lost that year was Cimifuga/bugbane. It has lovely dark leaves that I'd also highly anticipated. Must ponder a new place!

IVG, I definitely will be looking into those other varieties! :-)

Tina, Thanks. I took the photo last night... with a flash. You can tell I need to be working back there!!! I just purchased a few bags of hardwood mulch... where are those old newspapers?

Deb, FYI: I really did let out a whoop and a big grin!

Gail, Thanks! And you're right. The foliage is great. I'll let you know when it blossoms. :-)

  5. You are funny. If you had newspapers you might not get the self seeded surprises-so I guess a tradeoff? Very cute post.

  6. I'm so jealous! I can keep Bugbanes alive, but I think my soil wouldn't support a Ligularia. I have often cast covetous eyes on 'Othello,' although 'The Rocket' is nice too. Congrats!

  7. Hi Tina. :-)

MMD, do you have a tip on Bugbanes??
Do you not have a damp spot for a ligularia? I planted mine at the end of a dry "river" bed for run-off. (We're really on a slope!) Thanks!
