You might remember that I'd planted a few things in the front of my sunny corner flower bed. I'd planted rhubarb, tomatoes, green peppers, parsley and carrots. :-)
Last night we ate three carrots from the bed (in a yummy dish for dinner). But I've a little mystery for you to solve. Here are photos of the carrots.
"What's Up" with those three red ones??
Ooooh, they look fabulous. I haven't grown carrots, but I don't think I would give a hoot about the color. I would just gobble them up.

That's interesting. I don't have an answer unless a seed of another variety got mistakenly mixed in with the packet you planted?? Does it taste different/better/same??
ReplyDeleteNot a clue but I wanted to see your carrot crop! It's beautiful! gail
ReplyDeleteThe were exposed to alien sonic ultra-violet radiation? Oh I give up!
ReplyDeleteRobin, It really is nice to think I can grow a Few edible items! :-)
ReplyDeleteKathleen, You have ventured the same explanation I came up with. I haven't tried the red ones, yet... but the "regular" ones are great! :-)
Gail, How are you? It's not a huge crop, but it's satisfying. ;-) (I'm anxiously watching my mailbox!)
troutbirder... I did wonder about that, myself! ha. They're certainly a lot different from what I usually associate with the image "carrot!"
I grew some Nantes carrots this summer ('Bolero') and there were a few red ones in with them orange, too! I've never seen that before. No answer to that question of what's up!
ReplyDeleteHi Kylee! I may cook one tonight, however when I cut into one last night it seemed "woody."
ReplyDeleteFun!!

Cheryl, Carrots were pretty easy! :-)
ReplyDeleteCould the red carrots be the result of cross-pollination or reversion to one of the parents... in the crop from which your seeds were derived? Just trying to think outside the package! Kathleen had the other explanation of which I thought.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, they sure look tasty and crunchy. I won't let Lucy-Maude see this post! ~ Deb
If I send you acorns, I'd better send you carrots, too! ha!! ;-)
ReplyDeleteI believe that one of the ancestral colors of the carrot is red (they didn't become orange until the Dutch started breeding them), so I'm guessing the red carrots are throwbacks. How did they taste?
ReplyDeleteI've never thought to plant root veggies ...thanks for the inspiration!
