"This was a blooming mystery!" ;-)
I traipsed downstairs to the basement storage room on September 19th. I was headed for the plant workbench to see about some pots, when "what to my wondering eye should appear?"
No... no tiny reindeer... but something nearly as amazing! It was a pot I'd purchased last Winter and completely forgotten about. There it sat, in the dark (until I turned on the light, of course). Upon closer inspection, there were Green Shoots coming out of the dry ground!
"What's this?" I said to myself.
So, I took it outdoors and watered it.

I had a sneaking suspicion, but I really had forgotten all about the purchase!
Yep! A Calla Lily. Now what?
I guess I'll be taking it indoors again.
I also have a couple that I planted in front of the house that I'll need to dig.
But, this little fellow should be fun - don't you think? ;-)
P.S. Don't you think that someone would pick up that fallen basket?? hmmmm?
Don't you just love little surprises?
ReplyDeleteAnd that little basket lying on it's side just adds a bit more character to your garden. It also might contain a few little surprises of its own.
What a great discovery! What color are they? I like Calla Lilies but have practically no experience with them except they are short lived, right? I bought a clump in full bloom one year, planted them in one of my containers, the blooms quickly spent themselves and I was left with a hole. I don't know why I didn't try to keep them alive like you did. I haven't ever had them again. These will be beautiful when they bloom I'm sure.
ReplyDeleteFunny stuff !!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure if I look around I'll find some forgotten endeavors.
Flydragon, surprises are good. I'm wondering myself what might surprise me when I pick up that basket! ha.
ReplyDeleteKathleen, I will bring these lilies in. Hopefully they'll bloom. If they do, "everyone" will know about it! ha. My mom has played with calla lilies over the years. I don't think she's had them for awhile, though.
Patsi, I was amazed. Guess those little bulbs had waited for me long enough, and took it upon themselves to grow! ha.
Nice surprise! The leaves are spectacular, even without the unusual bloom! Gail
ReplyDeleteHi Gail, I'm looking forward to bringing it indoors tomorrow, for the Winter. Perhaps it will bloom? We shall see! :-) How are you?
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun surprise. I never have luck over wintering these beauties. My sister has a place between the house and a sidewalk that is a microclimate that supports these lilies. It is always amazing to me that they survive.
ReplyDeleteLisa, Your sister can enjoy what most of the rest of us cannot. :-) I once had a neighbor whose canna bulbs overwintered right next to her front door. They lasted for years and years!
ReplyDeleteYou have to love a story with a happy ending. I might have given up when first seeing its former scruffy state. How fortunate that you spotted the green promise, nurtured it back, and now have a lovely plant with fresh speckled foliage.
ReplyDeleteHi Northern shade! The plant is now indoors, in front of a bright east window. Perhaps it'll provide more entertainment later... I hope! ;-) Thanks for visiting.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the chuckle! Will be looking forward to the further adventures of this plucky little fellow, as he luxuriates indoors for the winter... Deb
ReplyDeleteDeb, Hopefully I'll have some blossoms to show later on. :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you tried to save it instead of chucking this little plant.
ReplyDeleteRosemarie, Usually it's quite hard for me to get rid of plants. There are exceptions from time to time. But I'm really hoping that due to its healthiness, it might bloom! :-)
