Garden Bloggers' Muse Day - February 2009

February 1, 2009

Winter Clothes

Under my hood I have a hat
And under that
My hair is flat.
Under my coat
My sweater's blue.
My sweater's red.
I'm wearing two.
My muffler muffles to my chin
And round my neck
And then tucks in.
My gloves were knitted
By my aunts.
I've mittens too
And pants
And pants
and boots
And shoes
With socks inside.
The boots are rubber, red and wide.
And when I walk
I must not fall
Because I can't get up at all.

The first picture shows our Michigan grandchildren. This bottom photo shows our Omaha grandchildren (in my knitted hat creations). ;-)

Absolutely nothing "shady" about this muse!

  1. That poem is precious and the pictures are double-precious. You must be so proud. There is something so endearing about bundled children in snow, an innocence...

I was unaware (typical for me) of the first day muse day. What a great idea.

  2. What a sweet poem! Your grandchildren are adorable!
My Mom knits for all her grandchildren and they just love it. Grandmothers take the time to choose just the right color or style. I still have a sweater that my Nana knit me as a baby. Your grandchildren are lucky!

  3. Oh my, this poem reminded me of the long ago days of youth. Thanks for the smile.
Your grandchildren are so cute and the hats so nice. The memories of Gramma's knitting will long be remembered.

  5. That was a cute poem, and it was illustrated well by your grandchildren. I live an hour away from your Omaha grandchildren.

I remember knitting slippers when I was in jr. high. I had learned in home econmics, and then made more at home. I also used to embroider, but only completed a few things.

    Have a good day!

  7. Hi Shady,

I love this poem...and that's how it felt when we were kids...don't knock me over I will never get up! Your grandkids are beautiful. Btw, love the hat creations. I hope you're well this morning?

  9. I love that poem. It reminds me of the kid in "A Christmas Story" who is so wrapped up he can't get up after he falls. We're coming into the home stretch of winter now. The end is almost in sight.

  10. Grace, Thanks for your visit. Thanks for your compliment. You'll have to circle the "first of each month" on your calendar. It's a fun muse.

Catherine, I like to think that anything I make them is appreciated. I knit in the Winter, Quilt whenever I can fit it in, Sew a little here and there, etc. ;-) As far as my own treasured possessions, those hand-made items are always at the top of the list!

  11. Rosemary, I thought this poem was cute, too. And those days aren't necessarily ALL over as long as you can build a snowman! ;-) Yesterday was the first day in which I could have built one. Hmmm.... ;-)

Bobbie, Thanks! I've enjoyed your posts about your little grandson as well. :-)

Sue, What is there that would be fun to see between Omaha and your house an hour away??

  12. I felt this same way today while out birding. I couldn't resist a pile of virgin snow and made a snow angel. Such fun....

  13. Love the poem--I thought it might a Shel Silverstein at first. It's the perfect accompaniment for all the cuties here. Grandma's creations look warm and a perfect fit!

  15. Lovely poem :) I had a go at one too. I hope they grow up to enjoy plants as much as you do.

  16. I've never heard that poem before but it's perfect. I can't move very well in all the clothes of winter either (and I don't wear all that the poem describes). Your grandchildren are cuties and at such a fun age. I wish my daughter were still that little so many days! They are lucky to have you to knit them cool hats.

  17. Nutty Gnome - You could have another! ;-) Thanks for visiting.

Hi Gail! Yep, well and rolling along. :-) It's the old joke about getting all bundled up and THEN having to use the restroom. ha.

Hi Joey, Thanks for visiting and thanks for the compliments. :-)

MMD, Are you ready for Spring? I'm not, quite yet... need to finish a few more projects/ideas! ;-) I KNOW you're busy on Spring Fling planning!!

Lisa, Good for you!! Did you take a photo? I've really wanted to make a snowman! I'm sure I'll yet have a chance. ha.

Hi Rose, You can't be a 2nd grade teacher without a repertoire of childrens' poetry. ;-) (I'm fortunate they fit!) Thanks for your visit.

Hi Deb! How are you?? :-)

EB, I hope they learn to love gardening, too! One of my Winter projects is dreaming up my version of an Alphabetical Childrens' Garden. If it works out, I'm sure it'll be posted. :-) I'll also head your way to see your post.

Hi Kathleen, Our children grew up way too fast, as I look back on it! ;-) Being a Grandma is wonderful... just wish we were nearer. And I'll knit them hats as long as they'll wear them! :-)
    Thanks for stopping in!!

  21. What a great poem and photos of your darling grandchildren, Shady. I'm fortunate to have my first grandchild live just a block away from me .

    Thanks for contributing to GBMD.

  22. Hi Jan, I'm sure there are... but this week has been Very Pleasantly Warm!! :-)

Hi Carolyn Gail! You indeed are fortunate that your little Lea is so nearby! You can now begin planning a wonderful "Children's Alphabet Garden" as a way to involve her in gardening as she grows! (I'm trying to work out a plan for a variation of the theme that would work here when grandchildren visit.) ;-)
