Fall Color Project - 2009

Dave, at The Home Garden, is hosting a second annual Fall Color Project. Your obligation, should you elect to participate, is to take photographs of the Peak Fall Color in your area, create a post, link back to Dave's site (click on the logo above), and let him know you've participated.

As you drive towards our home, you'll first see forsythia turning their fall color.

Next, you'll see two areas of burning bush -

the second of which has Gooseneck Loosestrife at their base...Had you realized Gooseneck Loosestrife turns such a beautiful Fall color?
A tree out by my mailbox.
Trees downtown as seen through my windshield.
I got out of the car for the next couple! :-)
This is my neighbor's Pagoda Dogwood catching a few rays!
Are you enjoying your local Fall Color?

Personally, I'm wondering if we'll have much Autumn this year... the weather has been cold and wet for quite awhile (with a day or 1/2 day of sunshine here and there). ;-) Keep on your toes, enjoy whatever you can of the season, and now...

Enjoy the colorful walk across the variety of stages and places as they report!

  1. All I can say is that my Gooseneck Loosestrife doesn't turn a pretty color. It must be because it doesn't get full sun. All of the color you presented here is cheerful.

  2. I love the golds as the emerge in the fall! And the burning bushes sure live up to their name. Thanks for joining in on the Fall Color Project! I'll have a post up sometime tomorrow morning!

  3. Enjoyed your tour of autumn color. Even the ones that had not quite turned.

  4. Shady, The fall color looks great in your neck of the garden. I wonder, too when fall color will arrive~~it would be especially nice to see the sky a pleasant blue instead of gray. But it isn't freezing and for that we are lucky. gail

  5. You have some lovely fall colors there in Iowa. My husband and I were just talking about how the trees have changed color all of a sudden it seems. I'll have to get out and take some photos.

  6. Thanks to each of you for your kind comments. I appreciate Dave's patience, in that this post doesn't really show the PEAK of color. But, actually, I'm not sure we'll see that this year. Many trees are already dropping their leaves and not achieving much color at all.

  7. Thanks for the lovely tour! I'm sure it was even more beautiful in person. I love the burning bush. It's one of favorites in the fall. -Jackie

  8. Hiya,

Thank goodness, I am finally getting some company up at Dave's place: I was feeling rather lonely up there.:-)

Actually, most of the red show is now on the ground. Strange goings on this year.

Fancy getting out of the car. Don't strain yourself now :-)

I can see why you need special leaf collecting equipment: that is a lot of trees you've got there.

  9. It looks like a bummer here too Shady. Sub freezing, snow, and not a trace of red so far. Oh well.

  10. Weather here is the pits too. Rain, cool. Like this idea hope to participate.

  11. The leaves in your area are really getting pretty, Shady! The colour in NS was so spectacular last year that I think 2009 will pale by comparison. I've been putting off taking my "Fall Colour" photos, thinking that they hadn't peaked yet, but I think I'd better get on it! They might be as good as they get. :)

  12. You captured the feeling of Autumn perfectly! The leaves in our area were blasted by snow. What a rip-off! At least I can enjoy these.

  14. Hi Jackie, I honestly thought I'd left a comment this morning! hmmm. Anyway, I agree that the burning bush is beautiful!! However, if you don't have one yet, look around for the seedless variety. I have tons of seedlings in the Spring..

Hi Joco, Thanks for visiting again. I had to laugh... I know, I know... getting out of the car is the best idea. However, I did look both ways before trying to take photos from inside the car. :-)

Troutbirder, If YOU aren't seeing color up there... I'm going to assume that the trees that are fading from green to browns and dull yellows will probably stay pretty much that way. We've enjoyed some sunshine today!! yea!

Rosemary, I'll watch for your post. You will have a good one, I'm sure. :-)

Hi Nancy, As I drove out this morning, I thought perhaps I was premature, but when you look closely... perhaps not. We may last awhile longer, but I'm not sure there will be a lot more color. (Hope I'm wrong!!!) :-)

Rosey, Snow! How much did you receive? My daughter, in Omaha, received 6" last weekend!

Hi Catherine, Today is a busy day so I'm not able to get out and actually DO anything too constructive today. I did enjoy the sunshine this morning. I wonder if more clouds are coming our way, now? Hmmm.

  17. Patsi, All things considered, we would not be at peak yet, either. However... this year is playing out very differently. So, that's why I created this post. :-) Looking forward to your photos!!

Rebecca, It'll star again, I hope. :-) Thanks for your visit! :-)

  18. Autumn color looks pretty decent around your house. Here, it stinks. I can't tell if we're past peak or haven't reached it yet, or are at peak. That's how bad. I love plants like your Loosestrife and Forsythia that have added fall interest.

  19. Hi MMD! I know how you feel. I actually am afraid I posted too early, but yet most of the trees that would be drop-dead gorgeous by now are simply fading away.

The Loosestrife was a nice surprise for me this Fall. It probably has changed color before, but it is more pronounced this year... thankfully! :-)

  21. This is so much fun, it's like going on a fall color tour without ever leaving home.

  22. Hi Karen, The color has increased in some beautiful ways lately! Fall can be so wonderful!

T Opdycke, Doesn't this show that the internet has many interesting and valuable uses?
Thanks for visiting today. I'll need to see where you are. ;-)

  23. What wonderful diversity of trees you have in your neighborhood. We've been having similarly wet weather in Maine. The leaves are good but not as good as other years. So nice to reconnect with you!

Thank you for visiting today. I don't mean to make it hard for you to leave a message, but temporarily I am going to enable word verification. Too many spam messages to deal with lately. Thanks for your patience! SG
