The Great Plant Census of 2010 and GTS

MMD - Mr. McGregor's Daughter - has issued an invitation to "fess up! How many plants are now residing in your home?" Officially, the idea became a survey that You can also join.

She had me curious... so I scouted the house with my camera - and this is what I found: 52 plants. (I'd missed a couple that I'd reported to her earlier!)

I recently caught a gardener on t.v. who mentioned that one should have 10 - 15 plants for every 1500 square feet of home - for the provision of fresh air - and to contract the gases that are released from the various furnishings and wall coverings, etc. in the home. Something to think about!

Kitchen (3)
My three amaryllis bulbs

Living Room (13)

Two Christmas Cactus, three rooting Hoya leaves (counted as one plant), two healthy African violets, one new baby African violet and three separate rooting leaves (counted as three plants), and one nearly deceased (very old) African violet that I didn't photograph!

One variegated philodendron and one pothos

and my new sansevieria.

Dining Room (14)
(the walls of which are more nearly the color shown nest to the first photo below - at left)

one upright Jade plant (8 years old or so), pot of narcissus, dying back (one plant), one Louisiana Palm Tree dug up two summers ago, two "cascading" jade plants, two orchids, one sedum, one variegated ivy, one bromeliad ('Cortez Red' from my mom two years ago)

one more sedum, one more orchid, one kalanchoe, and one begonia (I'm glad my dining room isn't this bright orange... what a funny trick the light played!)

A Guest Bedroom (2)

Two non-hardy hibiscus plants

Downstairs (20)

Next to my computer - three cacti and two succulents

Next to the sliding patio doors - one gigantic Aloe Vera (many plants in one pot... years old), two geraniums, two annual plants (can't remember the name), one humongous Spider plant (I'm NOT going to count the babies!)

and nine green, live but unresponsive amaryllis bulbs that will find their way to the compost pile this Spring if they don't do something soon! (And That's the Truthththth!)

MMD, Would you mind if I also billed this as a Green Thumb Sunday post?

  1. Wow that is a lot of plants......but such a joy in the mid of winter. Will be looking forward to seeing your hyacinth in bloom. My amaryllis has lovely green leaves not a flower to be seen.

  2. You have a mini-conservatory there!I love your healthy-looking plants, especially your big aloe! It looks like dry heated air doesn't hurt them.

  3. Oh my goodness! You have a huge garden indoors! I am very impressed. African Daisies are a favorite of mine along with the Sanseveria (because it doesn't need much attention).

  4. Hi Rosemary, I DO hope your amaryllis performs better than mine! At least it's growing leaves. :-) (Last year, each of these grew beautiful green leaves - but no flower. This year? Not even leaves!)

Tatyana, The plants do stay pretty healthy indoors, for the most part! Guess we can't count on those 3-year old amaryllis bulbs! ha. We do have a humidifier on our furnace, which allows me to adjust the humidity level. (Good for the people as well as the plants!) Have a great weekend!

Hi Noelle, I enjoy raising indoor plants. I also have more time to care for them than when I had an active family! This home is very conducive to raising plants. Our last home (23 years in that residence!) was NOT a good plant-house... I really appreciate being able to grow them, again. :-)

  5. All your plants look pretty darn happy. I tend to forget about my houseplants, which is a good thing because then I don't over water them which I used to do quite frequently. My amaryllis are being very good to me this year. They are even blooming for Valentines day! I love your header!

  6. Thanks for participating! I'm tallying the results for a completely unscientific analysis and conclusions.
While I'm not usually a fan of Sansevieria, the pot yours is in makes it really beautiful. I think you have the most Amaryllises I've seen. I hope they get their act together soon and start sprouting.

  7. Hi Rosey, I'd be lying if I said I didn't care that YOUR amaryllis are blooming and my are not. ha. Glad you visited. :-)

Hi MMD, You had a great idea and so many people have joined in. My theory? We're anxious to see "Green!" ;-) Crazy amaryllis bulbs... Wonder if the threat of the compost pile will spur them on? ha.

  8. Those are very nice photos of your plants and they are displayed strategically in place. Nice post! I think I better count the plants in the garden too. :)
