the GROW project

In conjunction with Mrs. Nesbitt's ABC Wednesday,
(click on the G below to see her post as well as other participants)
and a Gardening project in which I've agreed to participate . . .

. . . here's my post-of-the-day. :-)

One of the first Garden blogs I ever visited, after I began blogging nearly three years ago, was Mr. Brownthumb of Chicago. He mesmerized me with his informative blog. Quite honestly, I felt that if I ever needed an answer to anything (and he being many years my junior!), he'd have the answer. :-)

He continues to hold my admiration. In his post of January 26, he included a information about a seed project GROW. (Click on the title of the project, at left, to view his post.) He also mentioned that there was still room for participation, should anyone desire to do so. Of course, I jumped right in - feet first, you might say!

The seeds are being furnished by an on-line seed catalog entitled Renee's Garden Seeds (click for transport to her website). Other than keeping records as to how and when I start the seeds, the growing conditions, etc., I am asked to post on my progress once-per-month. If you click on the logo below, you'll see a list of the garden bloggers (in the right side-bar) that are participating.

All that was to say, guess what I found in my mailbox last week? Yes! The items pictured below. Would you say I was GLADSOME BE? :-)

"I'm growing Nasturtium "Spitfire" for the GROW project. Thanks, to Renee's Garden for the seeds."

However, do you see that there was also included a bonus package of Double Cosmos 'Rose Bon Bon' seeds? (Say, "Grateful!") Wasn't that a nice bonus, and incentive to try my gosh-darn-best? :-)

Watch for this same post title once-a-month. Oh! I hope I have something wonderful to show you each month! :-)

  1. Have you planted your seeds yet? I planted two containers, saving back some seeds for another time.

The cosmos is a good start for a butterfly garden, when the weather warms.

  2. NellJean, I haven't begun planting yet. I'm planning to plant seedlings around May first (the same time that I'll sow seeds directly outdoors). So, I won't begin indoor seeds for a little while, yet.

  6. How wonderful to be able to grow flowers from seeds and help others with the data at the same time. I love nasturtiums and cosmos. I can't wait to see pictures when they bloom :^)

  7. Thanks to you, Sherrie, Michelle, Manag Kim for visiting. I'm going to assume you're doing the ABC posts, too. I'll have to visit!

Noelle, Doesn't this sound like fun? I have several interesting plans for these seeds - hope they grow! ;-)

  8. I remember doing something like this years and years ago. Tomatoes from seed, if I remember correctly. It was quite hard work but great fun. Good luck with it!

  11. Hi Sheila, Thank you for visiting and leaving a note.

Gail, Even if the seeds never grow (doubtful), the packages are pretty. :-)

Rosemary, There are a few beds that have a spot or two showing through the snow... no flowers yet, though. :-) I will be happy to spot something like that, though!!

  13. How fun! I saw that post but couldn't figure out how to join in. I just may have to go back and try again. The seeds sound like they'll be very pretty!

  14. Hi SG~~ Even her seed packets are lovely works of art, don't you think? I grew 'Double Click' Cosmos last year and adored it. I'd like to try 'Bon Bon' this year, although I saved a few seeds of the lighter pink flowered 'DC' last year and should probably just stick to this one. Nasturtium 'Spitfire' is a newbie to me. I'll be interested in your ongoing posts.

  16. I love Renee's seeds and also received the cosmos with my latest order. This is a wonderful project, I look forward to watching your seeds grow, along with the other participants. And Mr. Brownthumb is a sweetheart. :-)

  17. Tumblewords, I wonder if gardening doesn't appeal to your sensitive heart? One doesn't need a large garden... sometimes just a pot will do.

Hi Catherine, I don't know... Quite honestly, this is probably best suited for you, but I've some interesting plans for my seeds. :-)

Grace, The Very interesting thing is that I don't usually plant seeds, due to the amount of shade I have here. Even my "sunny corner bed" only gets 5-6 hours of sun, so the flowers I have in my beds are almost exclusively perennial. But, I wanted to do this! ;-)

Roger, So does Mr. Shady! ;-)

Hi Frances, (Can you see Mr. BTh blushing?) ;-) Right now I'm getting as much sun as you and everyone else!! Our trees are deciduous and so, sunshine prevails! Yea!

  20. What a fun project this will be! Your use of words beginning with 'G' was so creative. I enjoyed this post. Have fun planting and I'll look forward to following your seeds' progress.

  21. How lovely to see you looking ahead to warmer days and thinking about your seed planting. I love Cosmos but have never seen a double flowering variety, perhaps there will be some here this time.

I loved all the snow pictures on the previous post and particularly enjoyed the one with Sidney. What a wonderful age he has reached. I adore dogs and have always shared my life with them, I think it is lovely that Sidney is still enjoying life with you and hope that continues to be the case for some time to come :)

Of course I loved the poem too.

  23. Hi Kate, I'm so glad you visited. Thanks for the compliment. I'm excited to start some of the seeds under lights, but I'm going to visit family for a few days. Guess I can wait until next week! ;-)

Shy Songbird, Thank you for your visit. I'm looking forward to trying my hand at indoor seed starting again. I haven't tried for awhile. :-) I plan to seed a few of the seeds directly in the ground much later, as well. (My own experiment.)

Hi Kathleen, Thanks for your encouragement! I'm going to be watching our Filipendula this year... expecting much better things! :-)
