As you can see, our neighbors' mulberry tree was loaded with berries!
YUM! YUM!
That was three weeks ago.
There are no more berries to be had.
(We do have some chubby squirrels, though!)
He's pretty talented to hang by his feet and eat mulberries! Since I quit caring about the squirrels eating bird food, etc I find them much more entertaining. I used to get so annoyed with them.
ReplyDeleteShadyG, last week while walking back to the potting shed, I heard an unusual 'cry'?... so I quietly walked back toward the sound for all I could think about were the quail... one might be hurt. There in the tree some 20 feet away was this squirrel looking at me and raising cain.. She must have had a nest close by to be so annoyed.

ReplyDeleteI might have given them a run for their money ~ I love mulberries and haven't had any since I was a kid (picking them from the tree in my grandparents yard).
When we lived in Nebraska, this was a common sight in our backyard. We had a very large M tree and it was always being ransacked by the squirrels. Not that I minded.
ReplyDeleteCatherine, Since I've experimented with sprinkling black pepper around (I think it's helping), I don't mind the squirrels as much either. :-)
ReplyDeleteDi, the squirrels raise havoc when we're in their territory, so to speak. ;-) (I guess we are...) At any rate, you're probably right! (I called your cauliflower red. Hmmm. Is fuscia a better description??)
Kathleen, That's what I thought. Flexible for sure! "Where there's a will, there's a way!" lol. I grew up on a farm in extreme north-central Iowa. We had a mulberry tree when I was young. We'd climb it, stuff ourselves with the berries and be purple for awhile!! ha.
Rosey, The birds make more of a mess if they get to the mulberries first. ;-)

We don't have squirrels in our neighborhood yet, the trees are too young. But I'm sure I'll be laughing and cursing at their antics in a decade or two. I guess you were happy that they ate the messy berries? Or maybe you were hoping to make mulberry jam (is there such a thing?).

ReplyDeleteI like the shot where it's hanging upside down, and flashing that white tummy. I enjoy watching the squirrels gather spruce cones, and when they sit on a branch taking a cone apart.

When they find something they like to eat, it is almost impossible to keep them from it. Love them or hate them, they are entertaining.
