This is what part of this new bed looked like on March 24, 2012.  Last Fall, I'd put part of a load of dirt down here and laid some old rotted logs behind it to keep it from washing away.

This is a view from the side, looking towards the logs.  The homemade birdbath
(it was there when we moved here 9 1/2 years ago) will be moved.
I moved the little spirea (   ) March 24, 2012.

This photo was taken April 12, 2012.
"Mr. Shady" was given some old utility poles -which he cut for me.

I think they make a great "back border and preventer-of-dirt-washing-away!"

This is still April 12.

The photos below were taken April 26.
Not a whole lot of changes, but things are "rolling along."

Below: A close-up peek at a hydrangea that was given to our family
after Dad died last Spring.

Below are the most recent photos of the back of the "Backyard Center Bed" ;-)
that I've been working on.

There's going to be a somewhat grassy strip between the two beds.

Hopefully you'll notice more changes before long.
Nothing "shady" about gardening in the shade.

  1. No doubt early spring is a great time for those big garden plot reconstructions. Hmmm Maybe that's why my back aches...

  4. The stumps are a great idea for edging! My neighbor was looking for something different in his garden, I hope you don't mind me sharing this with him!

  6. I like the cut log look. They should help a lot and blend into the wooded look.

  8. It's amazing what a month will bring forth--all the lush green coming from your beds. I love the logs, angle-cut like they are. They look really good there. And the bricks look good too. Sorry about your father's passing. The remembrance hydrangea is a very thoughtful gift. It looks like it will thrive here.

  9. your new bed is already starting to fill up a bit. I love the effect of the logs. I look forward to seeing it grow. I'm sorry abut your dad. It is a lovely idea to remember him with a flowering plant, especially a hydrangea that does so well in the shade.
