Green Thumb Sunday

GTS (Green Thumb Sunday) - Something in which I enjoy participating... when I can. :-) Not always is there much blooming here during the Winter. Especially this Winter. However, you'll find a few items below (and can compare a couple of them from last Sunday, as a progress report!).

The two African violets below are the 'Kitchen Window Sill Sitters."
I posted photos of them last week, as they were just beginning to show signs of buds.
Today, one is in blossom. Is it interesting that two petals are smaller than the other three?

This "Christmas Cactus" was moved to the dining room. Pretty.
The first of my big amaryllis bulbs is getting ready to blossom (compare
to last Sunday's photo).

A second amaryllis has two stalks with buds growing...

And this is my ever-blooming begonia - variety unknown.
(I forgot to note the name when I purchased it.)
Looking towards Spring!!

The plant grows tall here.

This is 'Lightning Strikes' which I nearly lost last year... getting ready to bloom.

'Red October' Hosta - the last to bloom here.

Little scene with houseplants and hosta

"from seed" ligularia from Jim Groble
(a two-liter bottle fits into this cone for watering when necessary)
Happy Sunday!

Green Thumb Sunday - March 7, 2010

I do have things getting ready to bloom.
However, I want to first introduce a couple of new plants.

Mr. Spathiphyllum
More commonly known as Peace Lily,
and much easier to pronounce,
has come to reside at chez Shady!

This was a pass-along gift, that I was happy to accept. You might notice that he's trying to make peace with the blooming lot behind him, as well as camouflage a speaker.

Diminutive Miss Saxifraga sarmentosa (S. stolonifera). Saxifragaceae
does NOT own a diminutive moniker!
Otherwise known as Strawberry Begonia,
she also has come to reside here.

Pretty cute!
Just waiting for those sweet babies.
(Yes, I realize it's time to be rid of the Christmas runner!)

Miss Kalanchoe blossfeldiana
Kalanchoe blossoms continue and increase in number.

Miss Phalaenopsis (moth orchid)
has decided to grow new "arms" and buds!

Pardon the fuzzy photo, Mrs. Begonia was commanding attention.

That's it for today, I think. Have a great Green Thumb Sunday. Should you want to participate, you may still have time! Head over to As the Garden Grows to learn how to begin, if you haven't already done so. Just click the logo at the top of this post or on my sidebar.

Green Thumb Sunday - February 21, 2010

The scene outside my kitchen window today.

Inside, though... on my kitchen windowsill,
you'll find a new resident!

A miniature African violet.

Too cute to leave in the grocery store!

The "Christmas Cactii" are still blooming - in fact, now it's the pink's turn to shine.

The hyacinths have been moved to the living room.
#1 is now #3... and definitely reaching the end of it's season.

But wait! Do you see another new household resident?

This was purchased for a friend,
but it turned out that I got to keep it.

(reluctantly? ha!)

The kalanchoe has begun to bloom.

And a lily bulb has outdone itself in the Valentine Bouquet!
