Terrifically Silly over Blackberry Lily!

I mean to say, "rilly!"
I go willy-nilly
over such an interesting plant!

**This photo is from Wickipedia
(click on photo for their information)
Their photo shows how the petals twist after blooming,
and as they're creating seed pods.

(my photos)

It seems their consortium
sports unanimous contortion,
The likes before I'd never seen...

Creating a large pod
Not just a bit odd,
Containing their bountious seed.
Pardon my little poetic attempt...

FYI: I want to tell you that Belamcanda chinensis does pretty well in my fairly bright but continually shady spot. However, I harvested the seeds last fall and will be planting some in areas that receive sun from time to time (and perhaps dappled shade), just as an experiment. The plant itself grows much more sturdily in sunnier areas. My plant is very "leggy" and needs support. The plant itself adds a little "vertical" to an area that has other types of appeal (hosta, japanese ferns, trycirtis, etc.)

One of my favorite plants Shady...I love how the flower twists after bloom! I keep meaning to try to locate the yellow flowered one, too. I liked your poetry~~It['s the kind of flower that needs a light hearted approach!

Have a good weekend.

Gail

Hi Gail, I've seen the yellow-flowered one online and in catalogs, but never "in person." I think we're supposed to get a little snow tonight. (Ours has disappeared.) YOU have a good weekend, too! :-)

I have 'Hello Yellow'! Want me to save some seeds for you next year? I got it a couple of years ago. I planted its seeds at the end of the year, and I expect most of them to come up. I did the same with an orange one and I think every single seed germinated! These are just fabulous plants!

Kylee, I would LOVE IT if you would save some for me!! :-) Let me know if I have anything I can send you!

Shady, I tried to grow blackberry lily last year from seed (my winter sowing fiasco), and it never took. You've inspired me to try again! Thanks for the poetry, too! Hope you're having a nice weekend.

I'll save some for you! No guarantee that they will come true, since I'm sure they're a hybrid, but it can't hurt to try!

Oh wow, that's a stunning plant. I've never grown a blackberry lily. I wonder how they'd do in Colorado?? I really like the seed heads too ~ those berries look like something the birds would love??? Good luck getting the seed to germinate ~ I hope it works and you have lilies everywhere!
PS I always enjoy your poetry. :-)

Sure looks more interesting than my drab orange daylilies. The verse. I love it.

J, Thank you for visiting. It reminds me that I haven't been your way in awhile! Try again... at least it's worth that! If I can get any of my seeds to germinate, I'd be glad to send you some!

Kylee, send me an e-mail and I'll send you my address. :-) (It's worth a try!)

Kathleen, I have quite a number of seeds. As I told J above, I'd be glad to share seeds. Send me an e-mail with your address! :-)

Troutbirder, these little lilies are very subtle. They aren't large. But I'm sure you'd like them!

ooooo..I LOVE the lily! They are one of my favorites!

Shady Gardener said...

Dellits, You would like this lily! However, it is Very Small compared to the lilies you're probably most familiar with. You'd also like to see the coiled flower petals. :-) How are you two?

I never heard of this one. And isn't it pretty! I'll have to look into it's availability here.

Bobbie, It really does better with more sun. There's even a yellow variety. :-) I like how the petals twist tightly around when the flower is spent.

Nice photos and cute verse. Grew Belamcanda years ago - great plant. Maybe I can sneak one into my teeny, tiny landscape this year. /Deb

I have some seeds, Deb. I can't guarantee they'll germinate, but I'll send you a few! I'm on it right now! :-)

Ooh! That's so nice of you! Think I've got just the spot for them, near my outdoor "garden office." Thanks!

Deb, Hang on! I've just been visiting my parents for the past few days. I took the seeds with me, anticipating the mailing there... but it didn't happen. Just a few more days before you receive a little package! ;-)

OK - I'm hanging on! It's getting pretty chilly, out by the mailbox. After my next post, you'll see why I'm not anticipating spring, anytime soon. Thanks again for thinking of my Belamcanda-less garden! /Deb

Hi Deb, I have this vision of you in three pair of knitted knee-highs, a long woolen skirt, overcoats and a babushka! ;-) It's on its way, as of today! ha.

NO, NO! (Haven't worn a skirt for 8 years.) It's L.L. Bean couture, here in the wilds of suburban New England. Long johns, rag wool socks, heavy jeans, L.L. Bean boots with felt liners, hooded sweatshirt (w/t-shirt underneath, nylon shell (by L.L. Bean), baseball cap, sheepskin earmuffs (if it's cold or wet, sweatshirt and jacket hood pulled up over the head gear) and warm, insulated or wool mittens.

Thus dressed, I can stay out shoveling and taking photos forever! I guess I got the whole "bundle up, if you're going out" message my mom gave me, as a youngster. The one drawback? I'm not so sure I could get up, if I accidentally tip over... that's a lot of haute couture to carry around! /Deb

Ooh, Deb! Wait until you see the poem I have stored for GB Muse Day! ;-)

Sounds intriguing... I'll have to check in with you! Now, back to newslettering... only two days left! Oh, those looming deadlines. /Deb
