Green Thumb Sunday - January 24, 2010

I haven't had a chance to show Sunday Blossoms for awhile.

There aren't an abundance, but what we have
are nice enough for the moment. :-)

Begonia (I'll add the name here when I get it.)

Kalanchoe

Violet (unnamed)

"The Nursery"

(two "starts" on one of my orchids...)

and hyacinth bulbs on the kitchen windowsill.

Love your pretty flowers! Woohoo! Indoor gardening keeps me sane, too.

Hi Kate, Sane... hopefully! ha. :-) Thanks for visiting.

Wow, Shady ~ so many inspiring things here. The begonia photos are awesome! Look at you go with that new camera!
I love the marbles in the bottom of the hyacinth glasses. Very cool effect and finally, you must have a green thumb to get that Phal orchid to put out TWO bloom stalks! I am struggling with mine. I thought there was the tiniest nub of a new bloom stalk emerging down by the base of mine but then it just quit. Something I'm doing, it does not like. Good for you tho. It's going to be beautiful at your house when the blooms all open.

Hi Kathleen, You made me smile today! This morning, I was visited by a friend that has a Phal orchid that put out two stems this past summer (she had it outdoors), and he cut the old stems back - just above the new shoots. Do you think that might have helped the new growth?

Very nice Shady. I'm envious as houseplants are scarce in my house due to lack of windowsills and my penchant for spilling water on the few we have. Oh well....

troutbirder, I was watching a tv show the other day in which a Garden Expert was discussing the importance of indoor plants. Perhaps you'd better get a few, anyway?? (The shelf in front of my kitchen window was added later - with supports anchored to the wall on either side.) Anyway, his advice was to have at least 15 - 20 indoor plants per 1500 sq. ft. (or so) of house. Air purification system. :-)

I love your plant tags - I have to get that going, too!

Shady Gardener said...

Hi JP, Have you been doing some exploring? Are you talking about my "regular" tags that you can purchase at nursery centers or on-line? Or are you talking about the homemade tags for Grandchildren Gardens?

No matter what, I really appreciate having the tags in front of me while I'm outdoors. It helps me to much easier remember the names of my plants. :-) Thanks for visiting!

Shady,

I think your container with the glass underneath the bulbs is extra special. Love those and can't wait to see them in bloom. Hyacinths?

Shady Gardener said...

Hi Gail, Two are bulb-forcing and one is a floating candle container I've kept for Years! ;-)

Rosemary, I was surprised when I looked the orchids over this morning. The two sprouts on the one plant have Really Grown in these past couple of days. Yea!

Hi Rosey - Yes. Hyacinths that actually began blooming in the store. Now, isn't that great?? It's fun to watch the roots grow down amongst the glass pebbles. :-)
