Hi Meems, I can see I am guilty of providing too little information and in hurrying to make this post. I'm so sorry! I've added a little information about geodes themselves in the linked post. I've also explained what having a geode has to do with my garden. ;-)
My gardening buddy is also a rock fanatic so I've learned a few things from her. I'll have to show her your post. She belongs to a rock group which schedule regular hunting trips. I have a few of her finds in my own garden. Now I'm as crazy for rocks as she is. :)
Geode hunting looks like a fun thing to do Shady. It's nice to see all ages involved, and a good learning experience for the younger ones. I like your rock!

Bobbie, I know you'd enjoy the hunt! There are geodes of ALL sizes! Some are Way too large to carry and some are very, very small.
Mystic, It was fun. We were on private land, however. Our local park naturalist led the tour, so she had special permission. I would love to go again! :-)

I am so thankful to find another geode lover...I have been hooked since youngster-hood while mushroom hunting in Pike County Illinois, many, many geodes haved graced my gardens and have undone many a mower blade. I think they are fascinating finds, every one. Take care-

Hi Kerry, It's Springlike here, too... if you have to remember that Spring has a lot of rainy days. ;-) We had a noisy night last night with a lot of lightning and thunder. But, you're right! Yay! (The rain is a good thing.)
There are lots of these geodes in the Black Hills and I keep my eye out for them when I'm flyfishing. Here in limestone hills and valleys of Bluff Country we look for fossils. Its the treasure hunting aspect of it that's so fascinating.
I've never been geode hunting, but I used to collect rocks when I was younger. I always loved the geodes because of the surprise inside--the sparkling beauty covered by a very ordinary exterior. This will look great in your garden!
It looked like a fun adventure, hunting for geodes. I like natural decorations, like rocks in the garden, and the wonderful interiors of geodes make them especially decorative.

troutbirder, having been born and raised in extreme north central Iowa, I can relate to fossil hunting! I also have done a little arrowhead hunting - with limited success. :-)

Though an avid rock, shell and fossil hunter, have never hunted for geodes but sounds like I'd love it, especially with my grandboys. Thanks for the info ... another new hobby, just what I need :)

IVG, Hi! I do feel fortunate. I hope I'm able to do this again sometime. My young friend who was so generous as to give this to me was pleased to see the posting. And yes, it's right in the front yard!
My spelunking consisted of wandering in secret underground tunnels at both the University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan University some, erm, 25 years ago!
Love the geodes. I think its the best kind of garden art is to have something that' natural. Plus every time you see it your well be reminded of a fun outing. All the best, BOB

I've always wanted to be a rock hound. What a cool gift you got there and the friend must be thrilled that you gave it a prominent spot in the garden.
