Winter Wonderland

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow... :-)

When I woke up this morning, it was snowing "to beat the band!"

The photo above was taken around 9:00 a.m.

The photo at left was taken from the dining room of "out back."

This photo was taken out a family room window... do you see the junco?I noticed the birdfeeders were getting low, so I trekked outdoors to fill them.
As I stood there surrounded by the variety of bird and song, I decided to try feeding one from my hand.
I held the food on my extended glove. One brave little junco decided to see if the food was any tastier from the new "dispenser!" To say the least, I was thrilled.
What a wonderful experience. I'll do it again! :-)

The bushes standing in front of our front door seem a sanctuary for birds that have been frightened from the birdfeeder.

A Christmas gift from our daughter and son-in-law is this new birdfeeder (below). It's a "Yankee Flipper!" You may have seen some You Tube videos about them! Motorized by a rechargeable battery, it's guaranteed squirrel-proof! (And provides entertainment, as well!)I'm waiting for the opportunity to take my own videos of the squirrel/squirrel-feeder in action! ;-)

Below are two photos taken from our dining room window into very nearby trees. The first contains two cardinals... and probably other hidden birds, as there were many.

This second has a nuthatch. My version of a Bevy of Beauties(or a Bevy of Beauty)!
:-)

Hi Shady Gardener,

Hooray, you have snow! Must be a nice change from all the ice. I can't believe you were able to feed a bird by hand! I've fed chipmunks that way, but never a bird. Connor would think that was very exciting (if he could ever stand still long enough for a bird to even come close). We've been leaving slices of apple out on the deck and lawn for the birds, rabbits and squirrels. The apples keep disappearing, but we haven't been able to catch any of the action so far. We'll keep trying.

Cathy,

We were gone this past weekend. We drove to northern Iowa to visit my parents and family! As we neared home today, the roadways were pretty snowy. Guess it had been snowing all morning here.

Mr. McGregor's daughter (and anonymous) - I cannot explain why sometimes my photos disappear. I just reposted them. This is 3rd time this has happened to me.

Shady - I'm glad you got your photos back-they're lovely. I don't think I'd be brave enough to try to hand feed a bird; what a neat experience! Happy New Year!

Shady Gardener,
Hmmm. I see you have lots of snow too! It really is lovely, isn't it?

Yes, we've lots of snow. We received more (I think 4 inches) Monday morning (Dec. 31). A good way to leave 2007 behind. ha.

Oh, by the way. There are three cardinals in the lower left photo of the posting. Check it out! I clicked to enlarge and found a third female staring at me! ;-)

Hi Shady,

You're blessed to have so many birds around. All I see from my window are dirty pigeons most of the time.

I had to giggle at your Snow White moment with the bird feeding from your hand.

It really does look like a winter wonderland. I have been out of the loop the last few weeks, I look forward to seeing more of your great post in the New Year. All the best for a great 2008, Bob

Mr.Brown Thumb, You're right. I feel Very blessed to have the variety of birds here. Is there no way to attract birds (other than pigeons) to your yard? Giggle away! I did, too! ;-)

Bob, Thanks for visiting. We can all look forward to 2008!

I could attract more birds like you obviously do by adding bird feeders and diversifying the plants I plant.

Last year I had some little yellow guys visiting my sunflowers so I'll add more of them to see if they return.

I'll bet those little yellow guys (which are so very cute, aren't they?) are Eastern Goldfinches. When my son was about 4 years old, he Really wanted to catch one! So we bought a canary, instead. (Rutherford the bird!) ;-)
