It's Been Snowing Today!!

And I am Very Happy about it!

Happy for many reasons, two of which are:
Birds!

At 8:30 a.m., there were at least 6 cardinals, two (female and male) house finches, juncos, and tufted titmouses on my sister's tree.  (Please try to look past my makeshift "tree straightener.")  The birds were enjoying bird seed creations - a Christmas present from two of our grandchildren!

I had to post this photo.
It was taken through the front door, the walkway "fence," and the burning bush.  :-)

All the photos were taken through the house windows.

This was taken at 9:00 A.M.

The rest were taken around 2:30 P.M.  Clicking on the photos will enlarge them slightly.

And the fact that we can truly say,
"Happy Winter's Day!!"

Hello, it looks very cold indeed, and even the birds look cold too. They maybe are not very active to conserve heat. But of course winter is always fascinating for me because we only see snow in enclosed Snow Parks with artificial snow machines, as we only have the dry and wet seasons here. You might want some views of colors to give some warmth in that very gray atmosphere. I posted my blooming flowers, which might give warmth for you, LOL.

Shady,

So we need to get you a nice quiet wood chair to sit outside in the snow and photograph those birds... I sit under the porch when it snows sometimes, so much fun. Hope the snow doesn't get too deep.

Hi Shady, I'm in two minds about having the snow and cold return after the last two winters we have had. Enjoy yours :-)

However, on the plus side when there's snow the garden feeders do attract many more birds which is brilliant to get to see, take photos and try to capture video. I love that. I take everyting through a window too.

Thanks for sharing your garden visitors. I love to see your cardinals. Great images - that last one is my fav and could look very at home on a greetings card :-D

I'm with you, Shady--I actually enjoyed seeing the snow arrive. I went out and made sure all my feeders were full yesterday morning before the winds picked up. Great shots of all your birds, especially my favorite, the cardinals.

A little snow and cold makes me appreciate spring that much more--ok, now I'm ready for spring:)

My vote too Shady. Its been a few birds now and then... then the snow fell (3 inches) and I quickly counted around 80 juncoes, goldfinches, purple finches, nuthatches, chickadees, blue jays, assorted woodpeckers all on the ground, on the feeders, and zipping up and down from the trees. Yup winter finally arrived. For now I love it... :)

Andrea, Don't we have completely different environments?? Makes life interesting!

Randy, You are right. However, it was only 17 degrees F this morning...
;-) But in the 20s this afternoon. Very nice day!

Shirl, You are encouraging! And you're right... when there's snow, there's Much more activity around the bird feeders!

Hi Darla! :-)

Hi Rose, I understand. I'm about ready to look forward to Spring... but am enjoying all the catalogs right now!!

Hi Troutbirder - Yep! For now, we love it. And it's good that it's already mid-January. ;-)

The birds look wonderful. Just wondering what you are feeding them to attract so many. I have been trying to bring cardinals into my yard but have had no luck.

Where are you? I like putting out the sunflower seeds (without the shells). It's more expensive, but actually, I'm not paying for the shells... plus I stretch it a bit with cracked corn, safflower, etc.

I live in Ontario, Canada. I have tried the safflower and just a mixture for songbirds. perhaps it is the feeders themselves that they don't like. I know that a few are around because I have seen them briefly on the fence. My feeders are close to trees for protection but far enough away to prevent the squirrels from jumping onto them and I do have a heated bird bath for a source of water.

I'm SURE you must have snow! It seems the birds are the MOST active once the snow arrives! It does sound as though you're doing everything Right, though. The birds love having trees nearby (are they evergreens or deciduous?).

I have a few of both kinds of trees but I do not live in a forest, I have other houses near me. It is very cold here but not very much snow so far this year. Perhaps they will come as we get more snow, I appreciate your help and will continue with my efforts and to keep checking into your wonderful site.

Yes, we are finally having winter weather! It makes me nervous when it is warm in the winter. I want to get the cold over with, hoping spring weather will come on time. We haven't had much snow so far, though.

I am glad I read the comments so I could see what you use for feeding the birds. I have stayed away from the shelled sunflower seeds because I felt that it may cause even more squirrels to help themselves. I should look back at your feeders to see how they are situated. Do you get squirrels on them?
